APPLICATION OF FIRE RETARDANT PROFILES

Composites are increasingly being used in construction to replace wood and aluminum in… At Prince Fibre, we produce fire retardant profiles primarily with fiberglass. These profiles are different from standard profiles, as a number of components are added to the resin to make it fire retardant and meet the fire regulations for this purpose.aa

What is a fiberglass profile made of?

Normally, the fiberglass profile is composed of fiberglass and plastic. Fiberglass does not burn, so on this side we do not need to adjust the profile. Plastic, on the other hand, does burn. Plastic is composed of petroleum products. This forms a product that continues to burn because of the material, once it catches fire. Therefore, to make the fiberglass profile fire-retardant, the plastic component must be modified.

Making a profile fire retardant

To make the profile fire-retardant, we add a powder to the resin that binds the profile. This powder begins to release moisture at a temperature of 200 degrees Celsius. The moisture lowers the temperature and inhibits the fire.

Testing the material

The amount of powder we need to add to a profile to ensure the delay of a fire must be shown by tests. Therefore, before a fire retardant profile is ready, a certified specialist tests it thoroughly. Based on the fire tests, we know what ratios are needed for a fire-retardant profile and can produce this profile repeatedly.

Applications of fire retardant material

The applications of the fire-retardant material, like that of normal profiles, are virtually endless. In the past, for example, we have worked on fire-retardant facade boards and boat parts. Composite profiles for public transportation have more stringent fire safety requirements, but we can supply fire-retardant profiles for these as well.
