Composite Profiles for Common Thread
For the artwork Common Thread, Prince Fibre supplied the fibre-reinforced rods and tubes that form the supporting frame of a tensioned textile surface. The design comes from New York-based architecture firm SO–IL, in collaboration with Dr. Mariana Popescu (TU Delft) and Summum Engineering.
The installation is part of the Bruges Triennial 2024 and winds like a flowing structure through the cloister garden of a former beguinage. The textile, made from recycled PET fibres, offers a contemporary interpretation of Bruges’ lace-making tradition.
Prince Fibre’s profiles provide the ideal combination of high strength, dimensional stability and low weight – essential for a structure that needs to appear visually light while remaining technically stable. Even under changing weather conditions, the textile remains taut and the structure reliable.
Common Thread demonstrates how fibre-reinforced composites offer not only functional advantages, but also open up new possibilities for form in contemporary architecture and design.
