Carbon is an enormously powerful product that can be used for many applications. The facade of INHolland in Delft is a great example of this. Prince Fibre manufactured and supplied the aramid cavity cables, cavity slats and carbon fibre lining 10 years ago for this unique project. We spoke to engineer Jordy van Nimwegen, who proudly worked on this unique project a decade ago. This façade, which was created in cooperation with technical production company Octatube, is still considered to be a beautiful, innovative solution in the land of curtain walls. The result was an innovative, very slim and powerful façade that the world had never seen before!

Inholland

OPTIMAL PROTECTION AGAINST

HORIZONTAL WIND LOAD

A glass cavity with composite cables. This solution was well ahead of its time 10 years ago. How was this 30-metre-high façade developed to withstand wind loads? The load-bearing effect is designed in such a way that the vertical cables in the glass of the cavity behave like a sail. This means that the façade can move back and forth by up to 30 centimetres under a horizontal wind load. The cables inside the glass are made of aramid. The lining in the glass and the cavity slats are made of carbon. This is a very special solution for achieving an extremely slim façade.

GLASS-COMPOSITE FAÇADE

THINNEST IN THE WORLD

The ideas for the façade originally came from the Composites Laboratory of INHolland University. A special aspect of the façade is that the main supporting structure is virtually invisible. The glass-composite façade is completely level on both sides thanks to our composite tubes that are placed in the cavity of the insulation windows. The glass panels are only 54 millimetres thick, which makes the INHolland façade the slimmest glass-composite façade in the world. The entrance to INHolland consists of three façades, one of which has actually been realised in this way. This is a highly innovative and experimental project that is also used by the University of Applied Sciences for education and research. The two remaining façades are of a slightly simpler design, with the composite cables lying directly behind the glass instead of inside it.
